In traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, the air compressor (which provides compressed air to the pneumatic braking system and suspension) is driven by the engine crankshaft pulley; it does not generate power itself but consumes a portion of the engine's power.

However, in new energy vehicles, without an engine, this crucial component must be electrified. Therefore, the electric air compressor has become one of the core components of new energy vehicles, especially pure electric buses, trucks, and high-end electric passenger vehicles equipped with air suspension.

Core technologies and key components of electric air compressors

A typical electric air compressor consists of three main parts:

1. Drive Motor:

① Type: Usually, a permanent magnet synchronous motor is used because it has the advantages of high power density, high efficiency, and high reliability.

② Characteristics: It needs to be able to operate stably at high speeds and have good heat dissipation performance.

2. Compression Mechanism: This is the core part that converts mechanical energy into air pressure energy. Mainstream technologies include:

① Piston type: Mature technology, high pressure, and good reliability; currently the mainstream in the commercial vehicle field. However, noise and vibration are relatively high.

② Scroll type: Smooth operation, low noise, small size, and long lifespan; increasingly widely used in passenger cars (especially in the air suspension systems of high-end models). However, manufacturing costs are high.

③ Screw type: Large displacement and extremely long lifespan, but high cost; mainly used in large or special vehicles.

3. Control and Management System:

① Integrated Controller: Usually integrated with the motor, responsible for receiving commands from the vehicle (such as pressure requirements) and controlling the motor's start, stop, and speed.

② Sensors: These monitor motor temperature, speed, system pressure, etc., ensuring the air compressor operates within a safe and efficient range.

③ Cooling System: Since the motor and compression process generate a large amount of heat, an efficient cooling system (air-cooled or liquid-cooled) is crucial for ensuring the air compressor's long-term reliable operation. Liquid cooling is currently the mainstream trend for high-end electric air compressors, offering better heat dissipation and lower noise.
