The typical structure of a PTC air heater includes the following:

PTC ceramic element: serves as the core heat source.

Aluminum alloy heat sink: increases heat dissipation area and improves heat exchange efficiency.

Casing and mounting hardware: protects the PTC element and facilitates installation.

PTC air heaters are mainly used for winter cab heating and electric vehicle windshield defogging. However, the popularity of PTC air heaters in electric vehicles is not very high.

PTC convection air heaters are very suitable for use in electric buses. The PTC air heaters used in electric buses use convection heating, can use DC 450V-700V voltage, and the maximum heating power of the heater is 5000-8000W.

 

 

The working principle of electric air heaters is based on resistance heating technology. Here is its basic working process:

Conversion of electrical energy to heat energy: When the current passes through the resistance element (for example, PTC element or thermal film element) in the electric air heater, the electrical energy is converted into heat energy.

Air heating: The fan blows air through the heating element, and the air enters the car cabin after being heated, raising the temperature inside the car.

Temperature control system: The heater has a built-in temperature control system to ensure that the output air temperature is within a safe and comfortable range. It can be automatically adjusted according to the temperature inside the car and the set temperature.

 

 

PTC air heaters are categorized by control method.

Hardwire Control (Relay/Switch Control)

• Heater start and stop are controlled via a relay or mechanical switch.

Low cost, suitable for low-end vehicles or auxiliary defrost systems.

• PWM Control

Power output is adjusted using a pulse-width modulation signal, enabling multiple levels or continuous regulation.

Power consumption is more precise, resulting in improved thermal comfort.

• CAN Bus Control

Connects to the vehicle control unit (VCU) to adjust heating power in real time based on battery status, ambient temperature, and energy consumption strategies.

Commonly used in mid- to high-end new energy passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, this type of control represents a trend toward intelligent operation.

 

 

• Cabin heating applications:

Installed in the vehicle's heating ducts or air conditioning system, it quickly heats the air entering the cabin.
Its primary function is to provide cabin heating in winter and enhance passenger comfort.

• For front windshield defrosting and demisting:

Installed in the air conditioning vent or duct system, it blows hot air toward the windshield, rapidly defrosting and defrosting the windshield.
Ensuring driving safety, it is a standard winter feature for new energy vehicles.

• For battery compartment/component compartment air heating:

It is used for thermal management of battery packs, electronic control units (ECUs), and power motor control systems.
