1 Structural composition

 

This series of 240W electronic water pumps is a brushless motor-driven canned motor pump. The main components are as follows:

  1. A DC brushless motor, including a rotating assembly (impeller assembly, shielding assembly, flange, rotor assembly) and a stator housing.
  2. A controller (PCB assembly) for communicating with the main control unit and controlling the DC brushless motor.

Pump Protection Strategy

 

Reverse Connection Protection

Within the normal operating voltage range, if the positive and negative terminals of the power supply are reversed, the water pump will stop working and will not provide any feedback signal, but it will not be damaged. It will resume normal operation after the power supply is reconnected correctly.

 

Overvoltage Protection

When the power supply voltage is greater than 33V (±0.5V) for 0.5s, the water pump will stop working and provide a fault signal.

When the voltage is lower than 32V (±0.5V) for 1s, the water pump will restart.

 

Undervoltage Protection

When the power supply voltage is less than 17V (±0.5V) for 0.5s, the water pump will stop working and provide a fault signal.

When the voltage is higher than 18V (±0.5V) for 1s, the water pump will restart.

 

Stalled Rotor Protection

If a foreign object in the pipeline causes the rotor to jam, it will automatically stop working and provide a fault signal, restarting again after 2s. If the fault is not cleared, the water pump will restart 50 times before stopping.

 

Idle Run Protection

When the water pump speed exceeds 3400 rpm, if the power consumption of the water pump is less than 60W, the water pump enters a low-speed operation state, stops after 15 minutes, reports a fault, and resumes operation after power-on. If the pipeline returns to normal during low-speed operation, the water pump will exit the low-speed operation state.

 

Over-Temperature Protection

When the MCU temperature exceeds 150℃, the water pump stops working and reports a fault signal. When the temperature remains below 145℃ for 5 seconds, the water pump restarts.

 

Overcurrent Protection

When the water pump detects a current greater than 55A, the water pump stops working, reports a fault signal, and restarts again after 3 seconds. If the fault is not cleared, the water pump will restart 50 times before stopping.

 

Troubleshooting and Solutions

Remove any foreign matter that may be causing the rotor to seize.

1. There is impurity in the pump.

Remove any impurities.

2. There is gas in the pump that cannot be discharged.

Point the water outlet upward to ensure there is no air in the liquid source.

3. There is no liquid in the pump, and the pump is running dry.

Allow the pump to maintain a constant supply of liquid.

 

Repair and Maintenance

 

1. Check the water pump and pipeline connections for tightness. If loose, tighten the clamps with a clamp wrench.

2. Check the screws connecting the pump head and motor for tightness. If loose, tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.

3. Check the water pump's fixation to the vehicle body. If loose, tighten it with a wrench.

4. Check the terminals inside the connector for good contact.

5. Regularly clean dust and dirt from the water pump's exterior surface to ensure proper heat dissipation.

 

Precautions

 

1. The water pump must be installed horizontally, away from high-temperature areas, in a location with low temperature or good air circulation, and as close as possible to the radiator to reduce inlet resistance. The installation height should be greater than 500mm from the ground, approximately one-quarter of the total height of the radiator.

2. The water pump must not be operated continuously with the outlet valve closed, as this will cause the medium to vaporize inside the pump body. When stopping the pump, never close the inlet valve before stopping the pump, as this will cause a sudden interruption of fluid flow.

Prolonged use of the pump without liquid is strictly prohibited. Lack of lubrication will cause accelerated wear on internal parts, reducing the pump's lifespan.

4. Minimize the use of bends in the cooling pipe layout (bends less than 90° are strictly prohibited at the outlet) to reduce pipe resistance and ensure unobstructed flow.

5. Before first use and after maintenance, the water pump must be fully purged to ensure the pump and suction pipe are filled with coolant.

6. Do not use liquids containing impurities larger than 0.35mm or magnetic particles; this will cause pump jamming and wear damage.

7. In low-temperature environments, ensure the antifreeze used will not freeze or become excessively viscous.

8. If there is water on the connector pins, clean them before use.

9. When not in use for extended periods, cover with dust covers to prevent dust from entering the inlet and outlet.

10. Before powering on, verify the connections are correct; otherwise, malfunctions may occur.

11. The cooling medium should meet the requirements of national standards.
