It combines a refrigeration cycle (cooling) and a PTC heating circuit (heating) to maintain the battery pack within its optimal operating temperature range , ensuring performance, safety, and longevity.
2. Key Components & Functions
A. Refrigerant Circuit (Cooling Loop)
- This loop removes heat from the battery during high-temperature conditions (e.g., fast charging, high-load driving).
- Compressor: Pressurizes and compresses low-pressure refrigerant vapor into high-temperature, high-pressure gas.
- Condenser: Releases heat from the high-pressure refrigerant to ambient air (via the water tank/radiator), condensing it into a high-pressure liquid.
- Expansion Valve: Reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, causing it to cool rapidly into a low-pressure liquid-vapor mixture.
- Evaporator: Absorbs heat from the coolant circuit, vaporizing the refrigerant back into low-pressure vapor, which returns to the compressor to repeat the cycle.
B. Coolant Circuit (Liquid Loop)
- This is the intermediate loop that transfers heat between the battery, heat exchanger, and the refrigeration/heating systems.
- Electronic Water Pump: Circulates the coolant (e.g., ethylene glycol solution) through the entire loop.
- Heat Exchanger: Acts as the interface between the refrigerant circuit and coolant circuit. It transfers cooling from the evaporator to the coolant (for battery cooling) or transfers heat from the coolant (for heating).
- Battery Pack: The load to be thermally managed. Heat is absorbed from the battery during cooling, and heat is delivered to the battery during heating.
C. Heating Circuit (Low-Temperature Operation)
- This loop warms the battery in cold environments to maintain performance (e.g., low-temperature charging/discharging).
- PTC Coolant Heater: A positive temperature coefficient heater that electrically heats the coolant before it flows to the battery. It is self-regulating, preventing overheating.
- PTC/PT100 Sensor (PTC): A temperature sensor that monitors the coolant or battery temperature, providing feedback to the system controller to adjust heating/cooling power.
D. Water Tank/Radiator
The condenser rejects heat to ambient air through this component, acting as the heat sink for the refrigeration cycle.
3. Operating Modes
Mode 1: Cooling Mode
- The compressor runs, and the refrigeration cycle activates.
- The evaporator cools the coolant in the heat exchanger.
- The electronic water pump circulates the chilled coolant to the battery pack, absorbing heat.
- The warmed coolant returns to the heat exchanger to be cooled again.
- Heat absorbed by the refrigerant is rejected to ambient air at the condenser/water tank.
Mode 2: Heating Mode
- The PTC coolant heater activates, heating the circulating coolant.
- The pump circulates the heated coolant through the heat exchanger and to the battery pack.
- Heat is transferred to the battery to raise its temperature to the optimal range.
- The refrigerant circuit is typically inactive in this mode.
