In thermal management systems, the three-way valve plays a pivotal role in switching fluid paths and distributing flow. Typically connecting three channels, it utilizes precise adjustment of the valve core position to execute two fundamental functions: mixing (combining two input streams into a single output) or diverting (splitting a single input stream into two separate outputs).


Within automotive engines, battery packs, or HVAC systems, the three-way valve directs the flow of coolant or refrigerant to various circuits as needed. For instance, in the thermal management of new energy vehicles, when the battery requires heating, the valve can route coolant toward the heater; conversely, if the battery overheats, it switches the flow to the radiator or the refrigerant circuit. It also facilitates bypass control; during a cold engine start, it closes off the radiator pathway-allowing coolant to circulate exclusively within the engine block-thereby accelerating engine warm-up and reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
By precisely modulating its opening angle, the three-way valve can linearly proportion flow rates, effectively replacing multiple on/off valves to simplify system architecture and enhance energy efficiency. In essence, it acts as the "traffic controller" of the thermal management system, ensuring that heat reaches the right place at the right time-a function critical to optimizing the vehicle's overall economy, safety, and passenger comfort.
