The Core Role of the Electric Water Pump in Electric Trucks

The Core Role of the Electric Water Pump

in Electric Trucks

The electric water pump provides precise thermal management for the three core systems of an electric truck by driving the coolant to circulate in a closed pipeline:

Automotive electronic water pump and mechanical water pump

1. The "Lifeline" of the Battery Thermal Management System

This is the most critical and core function of the electric water pump, directly affecting the truck's range, safety, and lifespan.

Low-Temperature Preheating: In cold environments, battery activity decreases. The electric water pump transfers the heat generated by the PTC heater or heat pump to the liquid cooling plate of the battery pack, rapidly warming the battery to its optimal operating temperature (10-35°C), effectively mitigating range degradation in winter and restoring fast-charging capability.

High-Temperature Heat Dissipation: During fast charging or heavy-load uphill climbing, the battery generates a large amount of heat. The electric water pump drives the coolant to flow through the battery liquid cooling plate, carrying away the heat and delivering it to the front radiator or the chiller coupled with the air conditioning system for heat dissipation, preventing the battery from overheating and causing thermal runaway, ensuring charging power and driving safety.

Temperature uniformity: Ensures that the temperature of all cells in the battery pack is uniform, avoiding local overheating or undercooling, and greatly extending the overall life of the battery pack.

Application of electronic water pump

2. The "Cooling Guardian" of the Electric Drive System (Motor/Electrical Control):

The motors and electronic controls of electric trucks generate significant heat under heavy loads, which directly affects output power and reliability.

Continuous heat dissipation: The electric water pump ensures that the coolant continuously flows through the motor water jacket and the electronic control unit (IGBT), carrying away heat and maintaining the electric drive system in the high-efficiency temperature range, preventing power limitation (torque limitation) due to overheating.

Delayed cooling: After the vehicle is turned off, the electric water pump can continue to run for a period of time based on the system temperature to provide "delayed cooling" for the electric drive system after high-load operation, helping prevent the accumulation of residual heat and component damage.

What are the application environments of electronic water pumps?

3. The "Heat Transporter" of Cabin Thermal Management (Air Conditioning/Heating)

Winter Heating: Electric trucks do not have engine waste heat. The electric water pump transfers heat generated by the PTC or heat pump to the heating core in the cab, providing comfortable warm air for the passenger compartment.

Working in conjunction with heat pumps: In heat pump systems, the electric water pump is a key actuator driving coolant circulation and realizing heat transport and exchange.

In electric trucks, the electric water pump has evolved from a simple circulation component into an intelligent execution hub for the entire vehicle's thermal management system. By precisely controlling the coolant flow rate and circulation path, it acts like a wise commander, allocating heat or cold energy as needed among the battery, electric drive, and cabin systems.
