In winter, the PTC electric heater is an indispensable "thermal energy supply station" for new energy vehicles. Its core function is to replace the engine waste heat of traditional fuel vehicles and provide the necessary heat for the car.
Its role is mainly reflected in two major aspects:
First of all, it is to ensure the comfort of the passenger cabin. Pure electric vehicles do not have an engine and cannot obtain free warm air. PTC directly generates heat by flowing an electric current through special ceramic materials, which can quickly and efficiently blow out warm air, ensuring the interior of the car is as warm as spring. This provides a driving experience that is no different from that of traditional cars.
Secondly, it is to maintain the health and performance of the power battery. The activity of lithium batteries will be greatly reduced at low temperatures, resulting in extremely slow charging and severely reduced battery life. PTC heaters (usually integrated into the battery pack cooling system) can heat the battery to a suitable operating temperature, thereby effectively protecting the battery, improving charging efficiency, and mitigating battery life degradation.
However, the significant disadvantage of PTC is extremely high energy consumption, and its huge power is one of the main reasons for the decrease in the cruising range of electric vehicles in winter. Although more energy-saving heat pump air conditioners are currently becoming popular, their effectiveness will be compromised in extremely cold environments. Therefore, PTC is still widely used as the main or auxiliary heating device, becoming a key component to ensure the normal operation of new energy vehicles in severe winters.
