What is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor?

We can simply understand a motor as a "converter of electrical energy into rotational force."
All motors have two core components: a stationary stator and a rotating rotor.
The name "permanent magnet synchronous motor" can be broken down into two parts for easier understanding and memorization:
1. Permanent Magnet:
The rotor of the motor is equipped with permanent magnets (inherently magnetic, requiring no electricity to generate magnetic force). This is the biggest difference between it and a conventional motor.
Conventional motors require electricity to generate magnetic force in the rotor, while this motor relies on the inherent magnetic force of the permanent magnets, requiring no additional power.
2. Synchronization:
When the motor is working, the rotational speed of the rotor is the same as the rotational speed of the magnetic field formed by the stator after it is energized; they are completely synchronized. There is no speed deviation, resulting in more precise and stable operation.
How does it work?
The stator is essentially a "rotating magnetic field." When alternating current is applied to the stator, it generates a rotating magnetic field, rotating continuously and stably.
The permanent magnets on the rotor are "fixed magnets," operating on the basic principle of "like poles repel, unlike poles attract."
The rotating magnetic field of the stator firmly attracts and drives the rotor to rotate along with it. The rotor rotates at the same speed as the magnetic field, operating synchronously throughout the entire process.
The entire process involves no unnecessary friction or power consumption; rotation is solely driven by the magnetic field, which is the core reason for its high efficiency and energy saving.

Core Advantages of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
The core advantages of permanent magnet synchronous motors that have made them a mainstream drive motor are concentrated in four points:
1. Extremely low power consumption and high efficiency
The rotor uses permanent magnets with their own magnetic force, eliminating the need for electrical excitation and significantly reducing energy loss.
While ordinary motors have an efficiency of approximately 70%-80%, permanent magnet synchronous motors can achieve efficiencies exceeding 90%. Using them in new energy vehicles can directly improve driving range.
2. Small size, light weight, and powerful performance
At the same power output, its size and weight are only about half that of an ordinary motor.
3. Compact body delivers greater torque (starting power), resulting in faster acceleration and stronger power for electric vehicles, without taking up much space in the vehicle.
4. Smooth operation and minimal noise
Because the speeds are perfectly synchronized, there is no jerking or speed deviation during operation, and the vibration amplitude is low.
The quiet and smooth experience you get when driving an electric vehicle or using an inverter air conditioner is largely thanks to this motor.
5. Precise speed control and strong adaptability
It can precisely control the speed, providing ample power at low speeds and stable performance at high speeds. Whether it's a car crawling at low speeds or cruising at high speeds, it adapts perfectly to both low-power and high-power operation of home appliances.
